This book made me so happy. I love a book where the characters seem fleshed out and like they all truly like each other. I don’t think I’ve felt this way since I first discovered Tamora Pierce. I loved the banter and I especially loved all of the secondary characters roasting the paladins for feeling guilty and suffering nobly.

This book was also really meaningful because of the themes of rediscovering your will to live and to risk your heart after intense hurt and depression. This book was really hopeful at a time when I needed that.

The romance is also very, very good.

Great! Sweet romance. Didn't think I'd like paladins but Steven won me over. Narrator excellent. Compelling world. Languorous pacing to start. The horror element (side plot) feels out of place, but I'm also okay with it. Grace is relatable if meek. The mystery was clunky somehow but I really enjoyed the high personal stakes involved. Perfumer career is cool. I like the world and will read more.

This book was charming and funny despite the macabre central mystery. Very enjoyable listen.

T. Kingfisher is proving to be one of my favorite authors.
I have yet to read a book of her's I haven't liked.
This particular installment deals heavily with two people who consider themselves broken yet they have found a way to make life work for themselves. Naturally, life has a way of throwing everyone curveballs.
