Honestly, this should be required reading for everyone regardless of gender. I first encountered Liz Plank's work on Instagram, where she celebrates healthy masculinity and criticizes the patriarchy's harmful effects on all of us. The comments on that page are often from people who make bad-faith assumptions that Plank is anti-men and anti-masculinity, which they would know couldn't be further from the truth if they read this book.

She hits the nail right on the head with For the Love of Men - it's a nuanced exploration of the ways in which everyone contributes to, and in turn is harmed by, toxic masculinity and patriarchal gender roles and their intersections with colonialism and homophobia. To name one example, I love what Plank has to say about chivalry - she states that it's usually something men think they are doing for women, but in reality it's something they are doing for themselves because it is part of the code of masculinity. The rule of thumb she gives is "if you open doors for women, you need to open doors for men, too. [...] If you're only doing it for one gender, you're probably doing it for the wrong reasons."

My only gripe with this book is that Plank's personal commentary (excluding the chapter where she discusses her work in Zambia) occasionally makes it read more like an opinion piece than what it actually is - a thoughtfully researched, nuanced, and accessibly written exploration of how we can do better with regards to gender roles. For the Love of Men should be part of the feminist literature canon, and I absolutely recommend it to anyone who has questions or doubts about the role of feminism in the lives of men. This book is an antidote to the "gender war" mentality that is causing so much harm to young people.

Every person regardless of gender identity needs to read this book (especially if you call yourself a feminist). I believe it is an important resource towards saving our humanity in this crazy world. This book breaks down a lot of male gender stereotypes and explains why patriarchal society and culture is harmful to everyone (including men). I also recommend you check out Liz on the "Man Enough" podcast.
