More like a 3.5-3.75 ⭐️

I had a really good time with this. There are elements that I’ve definitely read in other series before, but when everyone is pumping out Fantasy at the rate they are, that’s kind of inevitable.
I really grew attached to the characters and I thought the plot was intriguing. I like the women empowerment aspect, of course. The pacing was really good, and even though there were elements that were a little predictable, I still had fun.
It did feel a lot like Fourth Wing, sans dragons.

This was SUCH an adventure! What I’ve been missing from fantasy books!

Definitely moving on to book 2 for sure!!!

I really liked this, I had such a good time with it and I didn’t want to put it down, which is definitely the mark of a good book for me. I will say having read Iron & Embers first (don’t blame me, blame fairyloot for having it as one of their picks!) did take out some of the tension, just because some of the characters mentioned to be in difficult or dangerous circumstances are mentioned in a book set several years later.

I loved the characters in here, Thea is such a great character to follow, she’s really strong willed but is also really loyal to those she trusts and cares about. Wilder is still somewhat of a mystery because we have had a few chapters from his POV but we still don’t know much about his past and specifically what happened with his mentor to make him so jaded. The slow burn relationship between them was absolutely delicious, and Helen Scheuerer definitely knows how to write tension in a relationship.

The plot was also great, it’s got quite a classic fantasy plot but it’s been written in such a way and with a specific tone that makes it really enjoyable and fresh to read. The tension throughout is amazing and despite the spoilers I’ve seen I still feel a sense of peril and that there is that risk involved. I’m really curious to see where this series goes next because of the reveal at the end.

This is a fun and action packed read. The characters are a bit on the shallow side, particularly Wilder, but Thea has a good amount of charm to her. Her friendships are fun and a nice balance to the relationship she has with her sister. The story is exciting and I liked the romantic plot as well.
