4.25 stars.

This book follows Althea who knows she only has a few years left to live and she wants to dedicate those years she has left by becoming a warrior legend.

Women are not allowed to be a warrior legend or fight where she is from, so she has spent her whole life learning in secret. Wilder Hawthorne finds her practicing in secret one day and then it all goes on from there.

I love Altheas determination to not give up on what she dreams of becoming. I love her relationship with Wilder, and I cannot wait to read the rest of this series to see how it ends up turning out!

I highly recommend!

Thea has always wanted to be a warrior of the mid realms, but no women are allowed to be. All that changes (and more) through the course of the book. Love and monsters and villains and friendship all along the way!

While it’s trope heavy and not the most original, I did read it in 2 days and was entertained.

A good start to the series. I really like Thea and feel like she is a realistic FMC, working through her own growth arc with its ups and downs. Love the side characters and their contribution to pulling the plot forward. Some of the descriptor/world building detail was a bit too obvious for foreshadowing or unnecessary which sometimes made the mid parts of the book lag a bit. Also not fully sold on Hawthornes character, but am looking forward to how it continues in the next book.

Althea really spoke to me as a main character—her grit, resilience, and determination were genuinely inspiring and easy to root for. She’s the kind of strong, grounded heroine I love to follow.

Plot-wise, the story was fairly predictable. While it didn’t bring many surprises, it was still enjoyable and engaging. The pacing was solid throughout, keeping the momentum steady without dragging or feeling rushed.
