This book was... okay. I loved the two main characters but I didn't enjoy much else about it.

The book centres around an incredibly fun sci-fi concept which I feel like the authors didn't get weird enough with, and at points I found the plot to be a bit meandering and repetetive, which was a lil disappointing to me as I thought the first ~150 pages set things up very nicely.

Ultimately I'm still glad I finished the book as I really really liked the ending, but I think anything else from these authors may be a miss from me unfortunately.

If you like Stranger Things you'd probably enjoy this book but buckle up, because I have thoughts

So I felt like the concept of this book was really good and on a surface level I liked the characters but it all just felt a bit... flat. In all honesty I think the authors had bitten off more than they could chew.

The characters were interesting and had really good set up initially but I didn't really feel like they developed much at all throughout the book.
I also wish the romance had kicked off a bit earlier than the last five pages because it felt like a lot of set up and not very much pay off. In fact, the whole kiss scene felt a bit rushed and it would have been nice to see an epilogue so we could see what happened to Adam and Rao down the line.
Also RE Adam,
I really liked his flashback chapters and I wish they had continued throughout the book with what happened to him after his aunt died, before he met Rao

As I said above the plot also just felt a bit flat. It was quite convoluted and started off great, but as soon as they went over to the US, it seemed to fall away. Idk I just wanted more. More depth, clearer writing, more explanation.

Overall this was an enjoyable book that I got through pretty quickly but I wouldn't rush to recommend.

Also - I would recommend looking up a list of trigger warnings because it leant way more into dark military themes than I was expecting.

This book had some really fun and interesting ideas - the characters' backgrounds, military corruption, the whole creepy theme of nostalgia being deadly and the physical ways that nostalgia manifests - but none of it was anywhere near developed enough. It felt as though it needed to be twice as long, which is odd since it's already 460 odd pages. But I constantly felt like I wanted more, because what I was given never felt like enough for me to be fully immersed and engaged.
The story also felt rushed at times, particularly at the beginning, which made it very hard to grasp what was actually happening and follow along. I think the idea behind the main plot is complex enough that it needs a lot more exploration.
The two main characters were lovable, as was their dynamic. I think that the time given to exploring the depths of their personalities was enough for them to feel like fully developed characters, but I still think that there should have been more; they both have such interesting backgrounds that it seemed a pity to not spend more time on them. Their relationship and it's development definitely needed something more, too - when we meet them, they already have an established dynamic, and it remains somewhat stagnant until near the end of the book.
All in all, it was an okay read - definitely fun, but tempered by frustration.
