Beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Found the layout of the book interesting and a small bit confusing while listening, think this can be avoided by reading a physical copy.

The writing is just so beautiful. The book in whole reminded me a lot of Sylvia Plath's 'The Bell Jar' - the beautiful intricately written, poetic writing and the very raw discussion of mental illness

An engrossing series of memories/reflections on a life growing up Black and Ghanaian in London, stacked with resonance and realisations. Lots of 'the first time I' and 'I'll never forget when's, and it doesn't shy away from serious issues of youth violence, state oppression, and mental illness. Owusu writes about sex and masculinity from a male perspective without being gross or ungentlemanly, light but not immature, which is a fine line.

Particularly enjoyed the chapters on the London Uprisings of 2011, on the centrality of music during worship, on brotherhood, first sexual experiences, schooling, on being fostered, and when KK is living in a mental care institution.

Chapters of interest -

Chp 4-6, 8, 12-16.
Act 2-3 (2011 London Uprisings)
Chp 19-24
