Honestly... The writing isn't amazing. It's clumsy and a little rushed, and the same could be said about the romance. Descriptions are repetitive. However there are some well thought out moments. Things especially get interesting around the 230 page mark. It's got potential to get better and the story itself isn't horrible.

However, the feather so black series is similar enough and much better written for anyone looking!

I decided to finally read this book and it makes for a fun summer read, particularly the graphic audio. I had not realized how deeply it is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I enjoyed that the story did become its own work especially towards the end. I enjoyed the characters and felt that SJM wrote a convincing representation of a 19 year old who had a lot on her shoulders. This was a fun read and I do have some criticisms.
The author jumps around with the timeline a lot. Often it felt like some descriptions were given once and then never mentioned again which made it especially hard to go back and revisit details on audio. I was able to figure out the riddle immediately but I still felt satisfaction when my guess was correct.

I went into this knowing that
Tamlin was not the hero
which probably changed my experience. I really enjoyed the worldbuilding and Feyre as a character. I was also instantly excited for Nesta having a storyline of her own since she was so dynamic just in her few scenes.
The Under the Mountain portions were definitely the best but I spent so much of that part thinking “I bet Rhysand is going to end up as some redeemed bad guy, but getting her drunk and touching her is just wrong.”
Sped through this, after so long not reading it.

One of the best books I’ve ever read. Laughed and cried a lot. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

The more I think about this book the more I dislike it. I’m surprised this series is as popular as it is considering nothing interesting happened for the first half of the book.

Also I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters if I’m being honest. Feyre annoyed me quite a bit as I feel like she made a lot of stupid decisions. I know it’s for advancement of the plot but she pissed me off nevertheless.

Would also like to add that the author used the terms “metallic tang” and “bowels turned watery” far too often.

I struggled with this one. Interesting world building, and quite a few surprise plot twists that kept me guessing. However the heroine was frustratingly lacking in self reflection and reads very, very young. The “love” story feels more like Stockholm syndrome. There are also quite a few problematic consent moments.

First of all, I'm stunned that this isn't considered YA. To market it as anything else is false advertising, in my opinion. Reader beware.

Second of all, the MC is really freaking dumb.

This isn't a genre I read a lot in, but this year I also read Serpent & Dove... which is marketed as YA and has waaaaay better worldbuilding and character-building. I would definitively say that this isn't worth the hype, but I'm glad if it's getting people reading I suppose?
