i loved both mc’s so much! they were both so unique and deep, flawed and passionate. izzy and lucas were always going to be endgame. the side characters were amazing and funny. the only downside was the miscommunication trope - which isn’t a personal favourite. other than that….beth has done it again. she will forever be one of my favourite authors
The worst book I've read in 2023. The entire plot summed up in a direct quote from the text? "Flippancy, finger-pointing, childishness". Izzy was unlikeable what an absolute child. Lucas a classic male rom com lead with no original personality traits. The chemistry was trash, stop telling me Lucas is 'just so muscly' I DONT CARE. The whole romance was terrible.
The good parts however were the side characters and the set up of plot points.

i read most of this book in two locations: on a late night flight to manhattan, and hunched over my desk at work, hidden behind stacks of boxes, half-waiting out the clock so i could go home and half-wishing the time would drag so i wouldn’t have to stop reading. i feel like those two locations actually do a really good job at capturing some of what made this story so dazzling to me— the awkward, fidgeting quiet of mornings and afternoons spent in my small library office, and the strange, soaring thrill of sliding up the window cover on the plane and realizing that to see the moon, all you have to do is look out and not up, the unfamiliar and beautiful vantage point.
one of my favorite things about reading a beth o’leary novel is the assertion you get that people are, in fact, good— that they are capable of being awful and unkind and thoughtless, that there are misunderstandings and revelations that make you cringe and waver, but that they are also, a lot of them, trying really very hard to be good and to be better than they were before. when people call romance novels heartwarming, that’s what warms my heart the most, i think.
izzy and lucas are just such fucking good protagonists individually and together, and i love the idea of your soulmate being the person who you want to try really, really hard for— or actually, who makes you want to try really, really hard for yourself.
also also this book prompted me to buy colorful clip-in hair extensions on amazon, arriving this weekend. so thanks, izzy. thanks, beth.
oh god they just love each other so much and end up in a place so gentle and so sure i’m gonna cry again i’ve gotta go bye
