Somehow both nauseating and fascinating. Krakauer connected the history of the LDS church and origins of polygamy to the rise of Mormon fundamentalism and Brenda and her baby’s murder.
What I felt the book lacked was empathy for the victims. Survivors of abuse had small voices and Krakauer spent an abundance of time talking about the perpetrators, in ways that seemed to glamorize at times. I think now in true crime literature, the focus has shifted to be more of a space to advocate for survivors and victims, so while I can appreciate the context of the time he wrote the book, I found it to be irritating.
Secondly, he relied heavily on quotes which, I felt, was lazy writing. Of course the quotes provided insight to the people and times he wrote about, but it was excessive.

Very interesting book about Mormon fundamentalists with, in parallel, historical information about the creation of the Mormon faith.

It's also the story of a true crime, the one committed by the brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty. Jon Krakauer also talks about the underage marriages and incestuous relationships in some of the fundamentalist communities. All these make for a difficult read, but it's a necessary one.

VERY Gruesome at times but Krakauer provided a detailed deep dive into LDS a d FLDS. Great work on his part.

This isn't necessarily so much of a true crime book as it is a history of an American-grown religion, the Mormon Church. A violent history.

Perhaps it would've been better reading it physically rather than an audiobook, as there were times where I zoned out and missed what was said. But I found the in-depth rundown of the history of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Mormonism and the FLDS church pretty fascinating.

And while I've always been aware of violence within the history of nearly every religion, my goodness is the history of Mormonism littered with horrid acts of extreme violence. Be aware that this violence included the sexual assault of and sexual violence against children.
