I'm still on my cult kick with the books I'm reading apparently.

This one I liked quite a bit more than Prophet's Prey that I read last month. This book instead details the case of the Lafferty Brothers and the heinous crime they committed where they killed Brenda Lafferty(one of the brother's wife) and her infant daughter Erica Lafferty and how their faith led them to this action. The play by play of the Lafferty Brother's planning and execution is interspersed with the history of Mormonism and how that history created this crime.

Obviously there are some CWs, so here they are: SA, Pedophilia, Cult, Brainwashing, Gaslighting, Violence, Murder, Faith-Based Crime, and Racism(You can check out storygraph for any I missed as well).

What I liked about this book in particular is how detailed and well researched it was, not just about the case itself, but about the history of Mormonism. It is written in an unbiased way without justifying or excusing the actions of the perpetrators. Krakauer also did an incredible job of describing Brenda and Erica as not just victims of this crime, but as people with thoughts, hopes, dreams and a future stolen from them. He also goes into the court case and the challenges presented to the prosecutors. The court ultimately asked the question of "Are people of faith insane under a court of law?" Which is just a fascinating argument and worth the read by itself.

It was an uncomfortable read to be sure. I think that anything that has to do with cults and the brainwashing involved tends to be uncomfortable, but I also think it's important. Knowledge is power, right?
