My predominant feeling throughout reading this book was the anxiety of hanging out with people who confidently don't follow the rules of common sense, without any premonition of the obvious consequences. In this, it felt as though it was perhaps intended for a younger audience. (It was also a bit predictable.) It was a bit tiresome, partially because of the above, and maybe also because I am no longer in the habit of reading on paper. (As opposed to digital print editions.) Good daylight certainly helps. I must just be old, on all counts. I like the author's voice, and the main romance, despite the heroine's obtuseness, was a joy to behold.
Also: what about the potential other crime? What happened with that? Is that not interesting enough for our high-brow heroine to minimally follow up on?!

This is not for you if you're looking for a good historical romance, as there are a lot of modernisms that take me out of the world, but this is a beautiful sapphic romance. Edie is unbearable to start with, but learns and grows. Rose is the perfect girl. My stomach felt increasingly sick in every scene with Nash; Edie is stupid but she figures it out. Characters are complex and marriages are imperfect.
Graphic: Drug use, Infidelity, and Sexual assault
Minor: Physical abuse, Rape, and Sexism

i get the main character was bi but she spent more time frolicking with a married man that was so clearly the villain than even acknowledging the girl she said she had been in love for years existed
