Positively gothic, to use a phrase from a Regency romance. That’s certainly not a bad thing, though it did take some getting used to. Parts of the story felt a bit disjointed, until it all tied up at the end. So I can’t complain too much. I’ll continue with the rest of the series.

I didn't like the FMC

I couldn’t get past the horse breeding scene. Not my cup of tea.

I really wanted to like this. Why is this book so boring? It read like the summary of a book instead of an actual book. Where was the plot? What was keeping the characters apart? DNF @ ~42%

I'm glad there are some new things I haven't come across in a story before, if not then its been a long time. So thats a new refresher and definitely not what I was expecting. Both Portia and Stacy are quite unique, had a bit of push and pull at times with each other. Just be in for a ride with this one because just when things start calming down, someone usually stirs up the intensity in the next scene. I'm glad I read to the end. I really enjoyed this one.

Romances based on deceit and secrets and lies are my least favourite, but I do adore this writer and the story and characters were engaging.

Portia and Stacy

This was really gothic and fun. Super OTT mysterious romance. Such fun!

Loved Stacy as a hero (but his name never did it for me lmao). He was so hot and alpha which normally is so gross to me but he was so natural in it it was hot. Does that make sense? He wasn't trying hard to be all alpha at all, he just was.

Contains annoying miscommunication. But eh. We forge onwards.

Portia was so hot headed and I can see how people could dislike her. Thankfully I love unlikeable heroines!!

Contains unplanned pregnancy, more specific details about how it is managed well imo below:
Contains an unplanned pregnancy that isn't poorly veiled from the reader. As soon as Portia knows we know, and she quickly tells Stacy who was already stressing a lil about the possibility and waiting for her to come to him if she was pregnant. Everyone was adults about it.

A lot of fond recollections of childhood beatings, which I found distasteful. Conflict is caused largely by an annoying amount of secrets.

This was schlocky and bonkers, and I mentally told the FMC to *use her words* more than once, but it was also very fun.

A solid miss for me. The story was written under the name of S.M. Laviolette in 2019. It started ok, a widow needing a job & pretending to be her dead husband to get a music teaching position. The hero (?) was interesting only in that he was an albino. I've not run across that one before. It makes for a lot of night scenes, which made for a dark, dreary setting. The story ran all over the place making a story within a story within another story. I started jumping around, skimming pages or just leaving out a chapter. It didn't help. There's an HEA but I'm not overly excited by it. Just meh.
