Even 30 years after I finished high school, I have memories of those years that can make fiction set in high schools difficult for me to read: add in the combination of football and queerness (and other sources of conflict that I'll leave for your reading of the book), and this had the potential to be a book that I dragged myself through.
But this book is wonderful: it neither shies away from its issues, nor exaggerates them excessively. And it didn't lose sight of the people and interests that its characters loved. As a bonus for me, at the end of the book, our main character isscouted by my wife's alma mater .
I wouldn't go back to high school for a million dollars, but I enjoyed most of this fictional high-school experience and will probably see if I can find other books from this author

This was the exact book I needed after reading the locked tomb series. I did expect the comfy vibe and how easy to read this one was, but giiiirl I was NOT expecting the plot to slap. I read this whole thing in one day, and it think it might have healed my soul a little bit.

the day that virginia & I put together a review on this book...watch out:
- Dahlia Adler claims there was an editor for this...we're not so sure
- the cover art for this book must be AI generated
- the writing is godawful...the lack of punctuation and excessive details alone make it painful to get through
- was there a name generator used to name the entirety of the football team and cheer team???
- some of the most cringe-worthy material I've ever read
- no, I don't wish I had this book to read when I was younger so I could "see characters like me" in my reading material (hint: this did not feel like a realistic representation)
- I'm pretty sure Dahlia Adler went to a reddit page and asked what queer high schoolers were into because why is the token queer friend group a lesbian quarterback, a LARPer, and a baker
