had a knee-jerk reaction reading ab religous homophobia in a florida high school
This was probably more of a 3.5 for me, but I always round up for Goodreads because writing a book is hard.
Before I get into my critique, let me just say that overall I DID enjoy this read. I was invested. I cared about the characters. (Mainly Jack, but I digress.) I read it quickly- maybe two sittings or so. I liked the overall concept of the book. The writing was fluid and enjoyable. But damn if I didn't want to throw it a couple of times.
My main issue with this book was that it was touted as a sports romance and the amount of sports that actually happens is damn near nonexistent until a few pages at the end. A book about football with almost no sports jargon until the last 10 pages? C'mon. Amber, one of the main characters, was toxic and a terrible role model for teenagers. Jack, the female quarterback, gets absolutely slaughtered and no one, not even the absolutely horrid adults in this book, stands up for her. So many bad decisions in one book. Also, was it necessary to use the f-word every other word? I get it, the book is for teens, cool, but every other word? They weren't even appropriately placed. Just thrown everywhere with no real rhyme or reason.
So, overall, yes, I enjoyed this book mostly because I was rooting for Jack. She gets all of the stars. The rest of the crappy humans in this book? Meh.
