I feel that Monique Roffey has a really unique/distinct writing style that alongside the actual plot of the novel challenges the way I view things. I think I could read anything she writes, is v poetic imo. Makes me feel rather clever and introspective to read her books but they’re still accessible and heartwarming.

One of those rare books that tells a hard story, makes your brain work and is still somehow lovely.

This is about a coup d’ Etsy in an imaginary Caribbean island, which ends up failing, and the consequences of it for all people involved. In particular that of a young boy that gets involved in the cult that staged the coup. It is about power, it’s struggles and what to do with it when one has it.
