I love this world so much & am always to excited to experience a piece of it again with every graphic novel/novel instalment I read. “The Promise” I had really mixed feelings on, I do have some on this one as well, but for the most part I really liked it. I love that it answered the question of what happened to Zuko & Azula’s mother, but it actually made me hate their mother a little bit in doing so. The decision she made to forget her children felt so out of character and out of left field & I really didn’t like that route at all. I did however enjoy the complexities of Azula’s mental illness and how it was explored throughout this graphic novel. While she’s the main villain throughout the show, this graphic novel added a lot of dimension to her character & made me feel a lot more sympathetic of her as a character. I still stand by that I hate how Aang & Katara are written as a couple in these & it’s making me really dislike the two of them.

Thoughts
So I thought this was the first book in this graphic novel series turns out its the second. My bad.

I love the Avatar world. I love being back with these characters. This is such a fun continuation.

In this story we follow Zuko and his search for his mother. We finally get to find out more about her and what happened to her and it’s not what I expected.

There was a lot of back and forth between present and past which was okay but I don’t think works for a graphic novel as there isn’t enough time to really explore the past. I just felt like something was missing. And I couldn’t connect to Zuko’s mum like I think was intended.

But overall it was still a good addition to the series and the art style was beautiful.
