Hypnotic and haunting, with poetic prose and stirring repitition, At Night All Blood is Black is poignant in capturing the total crushing of its protagonist's soul during the Great War.

Ooooof. This one was a tough read. World War I is one of the most horrific conflicts in recent memory, far enough in the past to seem like it was longer ago than it really was, recent enough that when you learn about it, you’re even more appalled. The fighting was brutal, bloody, dirty, and inhuman — which makes At Night All Blood is Black feel like a horror novel. This is the perfect example of why I love horror, it’s a genre that is in every other genre of literature. Fear and disgust are base human emotions and categorizing things into specific boxes is arbitrary. This book has a few of the most disgusting scenes I’ve read in a long time, but it’s considered “literary fiction.” 🤷🏻‍♂️

A short and heavy read that shouldn’t be missed for fans of history, war, horror, and deeply human stories.
