Erin piromane unexpected ma apprezzato.
Storia molto interessante sull'alchimia, i viaggi nel tempo, la dottrina, gente che viene costruita e tanta altra gente che viene uccisa.
Uno sci-fi dark, con una trama intrigante e uno inizio dalla fine.
Per quanto io sia un sucker per le varie linee del tempo, devo dire che tutta la parte fantascientifica poteva essere spiegata un poco meglio. Insomma, per tutto il libro i personaggi sono alla ricerca di questa "Città Impossibile", ma nel finale non sembra l'abbiano trovata, perché sono ancora sulla terra. La "Città Impossibile" era il viaggio all along?
Finale un po' aperto, che ti fa presagire la presenza di un sequel. Un sequel dove si spera che i due personaggi che dovrebbero essere forti come dei siano davvero forti come dei. Perché, qua do si arriva al potere finale, lo usano per sciogliere nodi e aprire serrature. Gang vorrei ricordarvi che uno di voi può cambiare la realtà e l'altra può viaggiare nel tempo. Quindi idk, potreste salvare tutta la gente che è morta fino a quel momento? Oppure potreste non fare niente e aspettare una soluzione nel sequel. Perché no.
Morti e climax un poco insoddisfacente, perché neanche lì vengono usati i poteri della Dottrina. Mi vuoi dire che due dei personaggi più potenti e più cattivi sono morti per dell'acido e per una pistola. Ah. Qualcuno può dire a Roger che potrebbe annullare la loro esistenza solo volendolo? Ah quando ci prova sembra inefficace. Certo
Personaggi interessanti, certo, ma anche un po' basic. Reed è il classico cattivone che vuole potere, Leigh è un po' pazzerella e uccide gente, Erin è un po' pazzerella e appicca incendi. Anche Dodger e Roger, i personaggi principali, col passare del tempo non sembrano troppo distanti, nella caratterizzazione, a loro stessi da bambini. Lei è matematica, lui predilige il linguaggio. Good for them ig.
Carino il "character growth" di Erin, ma alla fine il lettore non lo percepisce davvero. Perché, quasi da quando viene mostrata in scena, si ribella al volere di Leigh. Una ribellione che nasce un po' per volta, come quando uccide anche non volendo per poi non uccidere, ma il cambiamento non è epocale, perché quando decide di non uccidere non gliel'avevano manco ordinato.
Si sente che Seanan vuole rendere il libro diverso (un alchimista senza nome che è omosessuale, Jennifer che compare una volta e ha origini asiatiche, una ragazza indiana che ciao ciao viene uccisa), ma alla fine guardi il finale e dici "ah ok sono tutti bianchi". E va bene Reed che è un po' la creatura di Frankenstein ma fatta nell'ottocento, e quindi Baker razzista quotatissimo, ma perché lo sono anche tutti i bambini della dottrina? Se proprio si sentiva questo bisogno di avere personaggi diversi lo si poteva fare anche per i personaggi principali, I'm just saying.
Carino come Baker fosse una persona brava, che volesse il potere e la "Città Impossibile" per tutti, ma Reed abbia dato l'aspetto egoista della ricerca del potere. Carino come l'alchimia sia molto presente (Leigh è un'altra creatura di Frankenstein). Carino come le varie linee temporali si escludano e si susseguano e omg in che senso tredicimila. Peccato che i personaggi più Op che ci sono alla fine non facciano cose io, peccato che i personaggi siano un po' piatti, peccato che in un libro alla ricerca della "Città Impossibile" questa venga trovata ma non venga mostrata al lettore.
Lo consiglierei? Sì, è una lettura scorrevole e interessante.

Fascinating modern fantasy that I found very gripping. Lovable characters. A cool world with rules unlike any I’ve seen before. Unique and original. What I want in fiction.
I’d recommend it to people who like fantasy and books like Gideon the Ninth, or Ancillary Justice, or Ursula Le Guin.
I did find it hard to follow at times and wish the author would use “the audience not knowing the world as a way to create intrigue” less. But I was captivated.

It was very interesting but it moved a little slowly for me. Someone who enjoys a lot of descriptions would enjoy this book more.

This was an odd choice for me, a book that I bought for the cover and because I had store credit at the used bookstore. I ended up loving it. It had an interesting combination of Frankenstein and Wizard of Oz. It had twins who can communicate through a link in their minds. It had well-developed characters, despicable villains, and lots of adventure, intrigue, and action. I loved the relationship between the siblings and their quest. As a central California native, the settings of UC Berkeley and the Sutro Baths were familiar and vivid.
This was a long read, and there were a couple times when it felt slow, but I still had very few issues. I started this in print in July and it wasn’t “working” at the time, so when I picked it up again, I decided to change to audio. The narration was fantastic and I could not recommend it more highly. I think the alchemy and details might have been frustrating to me or I might have gotten lost in them with a print read, but the audio made that easier for me.
I love being surprised when reading. This is one of those books that took me by surprise, not in the plot but in what an absolute pleasure it was to read. I see more Seanan McGuire in my future.
The bottom line: Read this if you want a strange and delightful mixture of science fiction, urban fantasy, and contemporary with nods to Frankenstein, The Midwich Cuckoos (new TBR for me), and The Wizard of Oz.

oh my god i loved this. something about that cover just told me i would. it was sharp and dark and clever - maybe even too clever at some points, but even where there were plot points that took a while for me to grasp, i was still gripped the whole way through. it's so hard to describe, but yeah, this story was a whole weird, mind-twisting journey of alchemy and power and godhood, and i loved every minute of it. what's more, i loved the cast too! roger and dodger have my whole heart, but i also loved leigh and erin who grew on me over the course of the book. i wish i'd had more time to read because i'm sure i would've torn through it at the speed of light rather than over the near-month that it took in reality. but, if you love SFF, and you love a story that will keep you guessing, i would 100% recommend this. seriously can't wait for seasonal fears to come out - not long now!
