4.5 rounded up. This is my first Lisa unger book and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a bit longer than most thrillers, almost 400 pages, but I think the author makes good use of them. As others have mentioned, there’s alternating POVs but for me it wasn’t too many to keep track of. The characters were all pretty well developed and multi dimensional. One theme throughout the book really made this a higher rating for me: a commentary that questions why women accept/tolerate mediocre or even downright abusive behavior from men. Not just from partners, but family too. I felt it was done in a non-victim blaming way and women will connect with the female characters in different ways. I know I did

This is one of those thrillers that tries to have crazy twists and turns, but relies so heavily on cliched thriller twists that I only felt boredom or anger whenever a twist occurred. On top of that, the story isn't interesting, the characters are either boring or terrible people, and the writing had so many unnecessary details that this book could have easily been 100 pages and you wouldn't miss anything. The only saving grace is that the pacing is fast. That's about it.

If you want a quick thriller read to pass the time, then this could work. But if you're a seasoned thriller readers or are looking for something actually suspenseful and thrilling, skip this.

This book felt like a big bunch of nothing. No intrigue, no suspense, no surprises, no real reveal, no emotion for the characters (didn't like them, didn't love to hate them) and no twist to the story. It was all very linear, predictable and flat. Only redeeming quality is that the writing was pretty good, but overall, all around disappointing.

Great premise, and it was exciting for 3/4 of the book, but kind of fizzled at the end.

The story was not interesting and the snail-like pacing was too slow.
