I was expecting an examination of how the character type of the femme fatale has developed through time. I'm not actually sure what it was that I got. This book was extremely confusing and hard to follow; even though I accept some confusion since I'm clearly not familiar with the field, I couldn't make out even an attempt at structure; topics seemed to be jumbled together in an almost nonsensical way. Finally, the last chapter, titled "Conclusion" not only doesn't sum up anything that has been said so far, but ends with a declaration that the next few chapters are going to discuss opera, but there the book ends. I was left more confused and frustrated than anything else.
