I appreciated the themes and the setting; however the dialogue didn't feel authentic, and I ended up speed-reading it so I could finish it.
another page turner...or button pusher since I am reading it on my Kindle
Reminded me a little of The Secret Life of Bees...the historical portion. Great coming of age book during one of the darkest times in our historical past.

It reminded me of To Kill A Mockingbird-at times the similarities were a bit too close.
I got this as a free Kindle book ages ago. I picked it up for a reading challenge because I needed a book set in Virginia. The story, while not particularly original, is one that could be interesting -- white family in racist town in the 1930s takes in orphaned daughter of black family. KKK involved, etc. But the characters were essentially one-dimensional; I never really became emotionally involved with them. Fine for a free book to read while waiting in lines and other places on my phone.
I picked this one up because I got a kindle for Christmas, and this was a free book on amazon for it. It was a tiny bit preachy at times, but overall I really enjoyed it! I look forward to reading the sequels.
Interesting and at times gripping plot. Definitely a lot like To Kill a Mockingbird. At times the dialogue seemed a little forced.
I originally picked this book up because I thought it would be a good read for Christmas time! It is not-the title is deceiving. Still a really good book, even if I am not the biggest fan of Christian Literature.
The descriptions of the South and Jessie were fabulous. This book is a good read for anyone.

Finished this in two days. This book was amazing. The characters were well written, the plot was captivating, and the descriptions were incredibly realistic. I sometimes felt I was in the South in the summer even though I was sitting by an air conditioner the whole time. I can't wait to read the next one!
