This story of the possession of a high school girl's best friend has great 80s vibes and lots of creepy horror. The tension increased throughout the novel with each horrifying act of the demon. The story explored the fear of losing a friend, through change or over time.

This was a wild ride. It definitely felt authentic to the 80s, which was such an interesting (and not as great) time. I find it hard to rate the book any higher because of the subject matter but I did like the ending about friendship.

This was such an entertaining read. The relationships, both toxic and pure, was such a fantastic study of high school life, but added in sinister atmosphere with the whole possession plot (which reminded me of Jennifers Body mid way through).

It wasn't really that scary but the scene with Good Boy Max the dog made me feel sick.

The manipulation of Gretchen as she became deeper consumed by her demon was interesting to see, especially when no one else could see what was happening other that Abby.

I thought the ending about friendship was so sad and true and it wrapped up perfectly, with closure, as I like my stories to do.

This one Creeped me OUT. Made me CRY. Had genuine social commentary and did a spin on an old story in a way that felt New and Different. 5/5 would reccomend. Check the TW/CWs tho.

This is the most confused and conflicted I've ever been for trying to rate a book. On one hand, the 80's references came off a bit listy at times, the parents were absolutely frustrating/ awful, all the characters felt cliché (probably intentional) and were mostly unlikeable. One the other hand, I read 80% of the book in a single sitting and had amazing dark, scary moments that gave me real goosebumps! The tone/humor(?) of this book can feel a bit jarring, and it doesn't fully work for me.
Plus, not a big fan of dog killing, Christian Lemon did not work for me, and the ending was...eh?

In all honesty, I got this book because of the beautiful cover, and I was wanting to read something spooky for October. I did not realize that the author is the same one who wrote the southern book clubs guide to slaying vampires, a book I hate vehemently. I even wrote in my review of that book that I would not read anything by this author again and if I had made that connection earlier, I would not have bought this book.

As much as I hate his writing, the first half of the book gave me hope. I found the parallels between sexual assault and demon possession to be an interesting take and very poignant. And then he just lost all this momentum. The actual exorcism fell flat, cheesy, and lazy. Body horror has a time and place, such as with Margaret, it feel disturbing but appropriate. Within the exorcism, it felt cheap, just added in for the shock value.

In the end, I didn’t hate the book as much as his other, but I am deeply disappointed. He had so much going for him in the first half of the book and fumbled it. He chose the lazy way out and used a generic exorcism template instead of doing something unique and creative. And the very end where they began listing major pop culture moments from the 80s - cringey and a cheap shot at nostalgia.

I have learned from my mistake.
Fool me once, fool me twice, there will not be a third Mr Hendrix.

I really wanted a dark comedy/horror but I thought this was mostly serious with a few moments meant to be silly but walking the line with sweet and serious. I didn't love the shifting tone. The relationship between Abby and Gretchen was lovely and the pettiness of high school mean girls was harshly well done. The most climactic moment of the book was the moment I felt like Hendrix was trying hardest to add funniness and I just didn't think it was the right tone. I liked the story, I liked most of the characters, but I wanted more consistency in tone.

I did enjoy the book a lot, but sometimes it was a little to gory for my taste. Still it was really well written and a great book for spooky season! 🎃
I didn’t really get how they exorcized the demon in the end? It kinda just seemed like “yay! The power of friendship saved the day” ? Idk maybe I’m being nitpick-y
Also Abby and Gretchen were definitely more than friends ;)
