This hit right in my sweet spot of classique horror, enough manipulation, and a little bit of demonic possession. There are real glimpses into the life they lived of 82’ (and yes I’m referring to the horrific school event day because to pretend that didn’t happen IRL is an insult to the truth of how racist the south is). Either way I’m a huge fan of Grady Hendrix and happy to have read it

Grady Hendrix is really good at writing a type of horror where things aren’t necessarily scary, but I’m incredibly uncomfortable with what’s happening.

I almost DNFed this many times and came very close to giving up at page 270 (iykyk)
when she kills her dog, good boy Max
and I honestly wish I did. The 80s was awkwardly showcased instead of feeling like it took place then and I found myself bored and frustrated. No horror and no comedy.

This book had me ravenous. I couldn't wait to read the next part as I finished each chapter. The scares were well-written and often had me physically recoiling. I even had to put it down for a good ol' "nope" at one point. I might have to re-read this for my October scares.

Strange book. I won't get the hours back that I spent reading this. The pacing was weird, and the main character frustrated me. Seems like the author is bad at writing horror, and multidimensional characters.

This wasn’t what I expected. It was far less an 80s horror and more a teen drama. The last quarter of the book was GREAT but the rest felt like filler just to get there.
