This was surprisingly good! Not going to lie, the first third of the book wasn't that great, with too many names, and too much confusing worldbuilding, and also not a lot of action happening. But once I started to understand what was going on, and the trials got underway, and Raven and Bastien started interacting, I really enjoyed it! I like the action and intrigue of the trials, and I also loved Raven's developing relationship with the king, and I love how down bad he is for her. I think some of the stuff with the
coven leaders blaming the king for the thrashings and everything bad that happened, and him stealing the grimoires because they have power when put together that no one knew about until now was a bit dumb,
but overall it was still really enjoyable. I super hope we get more of Raven and Bastien together in the next book, and maybe get to see them start to
take down the coven leaders.

This book was pretty average. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. I was kind of bored with it in the beginning, then it picked up a bit, and then I got kind of bored again.

I thought the concept was interesting, alright it seems like some sort of trials/games is required in fantasy books now. Which is getting kind of old.

I thought Raven was okay as the FMC. She has her moments where she does something cool (like choosing the black dress), but then she also has moments where she’s kind of annoying. I guess that makes her more human, since we can all be like that. I thought Bastian was a good character. I always like the complexity of the good hearted man who puts on the front of being a ruthless man. I’m hoping we get more depth to Bastian’s character in the next book. I liked Kirsi too. Her sass was fantastic, especially with Grey.

Hopefully the next one will be a bit more exciting, but I’m curious to see how this story plays out.
