This would've been 5 stars when I was a teenager. It has elements that I enjoyed, like magic, trials, etc, but it was all very rushed. I wish the plot was slowed down and the trials were longer. I was also disappointed by how quick the romance is. It was also obvious that he was real and not a dream. It gave me the Biggest ick everytime "he used his finger to lift my chin." Stfu. The cabin scene also reminded me of acotar, but I don't mind too much. Also not a fan of a scorned ex-lover plot. Despite this, the writing was very entertaining and kept me engaged.

I was in a terrible week's long reading slump when I decided enough was enough. When in doubt, go for a romantsy. I had this book sitting in my kindle for a hot minute and on a whim, I decided to give it a chance. What an adventure this turned out to be!

The beginning of this novel was hard to get through, I won't lie. It's not that there was a lot of info dump necessarily, but I believe it was in part due to my reading slump and the way the plot and characters were introduced. Once Raven entered the trials, I was completely invested in this story! It was extremely captivating and immersive read. I haven't read a good witch-y book since the Vampire Diaries, LOL.

Raven has such a strong moral compass, it was easy to believe that she would rather get taken advantage and abused from her competition than stand up for herself. I know now that deep down, Raven has the capacity to outpace any witch, regardless of status or age. And it was more of a strategic effort on her part to let the pettiness slide rather than show the full extent of her powers. Raven is so used to being undermined and scrutinized, I don't blame her for choosing her battles.

That ending though? Phew. What a whirlwind of emotions. I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next and even then, I was not prepared when it was finally revealed. I just hope Raven knows that now is the time to show her enemies exactly who they've pissed off and enact proper revenge. I'm so excited to read book 2!!

Okay, come thru surprise book magic! She’s a slow burn, enemies to lovers, and I couldn’t stop! A witch trial (not like Salem) held after the death of the Moon Coven’s matriarch to find the new coven leader brings Raven into the home of the enemy of her entire race, the Dark King. Turns out he’s a total babe, a lil spooky and totally obsessed with her! And he’s actually been trying to thwart the corrupt coven leaders who have made it their mission to make him the villain! Ah! Going to read book 2 meow.

Eh just okay. I enjoyed the first half but the second half was a bit of a letdown and I got irritated with the back and forth between raven and the king. Not compelling enough for me to continue the series.
