daphne vincent is a childrenโ€™s librarian & miles nowak is a bartender. theyโ€™re friends, but they quickly become better friends when both of their partners leave them for each other

daphne moves in with miles, since her ex moved his new boo in with him & miles now has an extra room. they begin to hang out. amid becoming best friends, they also begin to develop stronger feelings for each other

โ€”

this book has all the fโ€™s - forced proximity, friends to best friends to lovers, and fake dating. and although this book has a lot of fโ€™s, it gets an a+ from me! ๐Ÿคญ

peter & petra deserved each other. i absolutely hated them

the writing is absolutely beautiful. i love the connection & tension between daphne & miles. their friendship blossomed beautifully. i love all of the friend dates that they went on. and it was immediately palpable when the connection began changing from best friends to lovers

the only thing that kept this from being a 5 star for me was the miscommunication. there were a few instances that couldโ€™ve been quickly resolved if they just paused & talked to each other!

the miscommunication between miles & his sister was also something i disliked. she felt like she was bothering him & keeping him from his full potential and he felt like he was letting her down, meanwhile they both were soooo grateful for each other ๐Ÿฅน

this was my first emily henry & i cannot wait to dive into more! i listened to the audiobook for this book & really enjoyed it

This was the perfect summer read for me! It was also my frist intro to Emily Henry 's writing style and I love that it really walks the line of a romacne and lit fic novel.

The daddy issues adn people pleasing rep with anxiety mixed in did send me into a 3am crying fit which I did post only.

Thank you to edelweiss for this ARC copy and I will definitely be buying a finsihed copy!

Loved this so much - my favorite Emily Henry so far. Iโ€™m so glad I bought/listened; Happy Place, last year, was my least fave - so I was a little wary heading into this one. I love the complexity of the charactersโ€™ backstories, and the ways in which they communicate and miscommunicate around the patterning they learned in their differently rough childhoods. All felt so real and thoroughly drawn, including for the side characters! I love Daphne and Miles so much, and their chemistry both together and in the web of friendships that populate the book. I love the way the food throughout the book gives us such a sense of place and care. So beautiful!! Made me so happy reading this that I drew it out a few days just to enjoy a little bit longer. โค๏ธ

Thereโ€™s a reason why Emily Henry is the queen of romantic comedies and this book, right here, is it! After being disappointed by โ€œHappy Place,โ€ โ€œFunny Storyโ€ is going to easily land among my favorites of hers (though Iโ€™m not sure โ€œBook Loversโ€ could ever be surpassed, Iโ€™m keeping an open mind!!).
Henry has this talent for crafting characters that you feel like you have known for years, and Daphne and Miles may be amongst my favorites. While forced proximity and fake relationships arenโ€™t my favorite tropes, I devoured every page of this delicious book. While not overly spicy, the steam in this one was just right. I found myself unable to put this one down until I could finish it simply because I needed to know more about Daphne and Miles. Not unlike Abby Jimenez, Henry broaches some difficult topics in this book and challenges us to think about how past traumas impact the ways that we live, love, and communicate with the world around us. Thereโ€™s some really genuinely funny laugh out loud moments which Henry deploys at needed times, and I think Miles may be one of my favorite book boyfriends to date! Incredible work from the champion of romcoms. I canโ€™t recommend this one enough for your next fun vacation read!

Emily Henry makes you feel like youโ€™re the only one reading her book. Which is a good thingโ€”a great thing!! Let me explain.

When youโ€™re reading one of her books, you almost feel like itโ€™s a secret. Like if one of your best friends writes a book and youโ€™re the first one to read it. Like you have the inside scoop. Like itโ€™s exclusive. Like this story was meant to be read by you. Like its contents are something for you to cherish and feel in your own time, your own way.

Her writing does this magical thing where you feel so present inside her words that you never really leave them. You read other books, move on to other titles, but her stories remain. When all else feels like a dribble, her novels are the ocean. Constant. Resonating. Engaging with you even in your subconscious.

What I loved about Miles and Daphne was that they were so in tune and in sync with one anotherโ€™s feelings and expectations, even when they thought they werenโ€™t. The right person can make all the difference in the wrong moments.

Miles is easygoing and thoughtful, confident but considerate. Daphne is gentle and shy but also braver than she thinks and tougher than she gives herself credit for. They make a great pair of roommates, friends, cohorts, lovers. They are two halves of one whole that, for much of the book, they seem to acknowledge but donโ€™t let themselves indulge in for fear of messing the good parts up, or not thinking they are what the other needs. They go through situations and feelings together, simultaneously, without realizing it. I like how natural and adult their conversations are, how honest they can be with one another when they need to, and how goofy and flirty they can be when they want to. How easily they fit into each otherโ€™s lives, literally and figuratively.

Most mature of her books I think, as far as characters and their actions. Well-rounded novel, nothing feels rushed or drags along. Perfect pacing. I wish I felt a little more connected to the charactersโ€™ decisions, but thatโ€™s more of a personal thing.
