Stone Blind has unfortunately been my biggest disappointment of the year so far. Sold as a Medusa story, I was excited for an underdog of Greek myth to finally get her story and for it to be done some justice. I think the fact that the text wasn’t taken seriously enough, in my opinion anyway, is what bothered me most.

The gods were a parody of themselves and for a story about Medusa, there weren’t very many scenes with her in it.

I can understand what Natalie Haynes was doing here, and think that this particular retelling just wasn’t written for me.

In saying that, parts of it made me laugh and I did like that Persues’ true colours were on show. It also showed off the pettiness of the gods, but it just didn’t scratch the itch I was hoping it would.

An interesting retelling of the story of Medusa, reframing who the heroes and villains are.

Certainly a new take on a Greek retelling, but I’m wondering if I really actually enjoyed the experience of reading this book. Almost all the characters, par the Gorgoneians, maybe, are quite unlikable; it makes it hard to connect with anyone in the story.

Also, I definitely expected to hear more of Medusa’s voice throughout the story, but… I feel like she’s barely here and there, just in small snippets in her own story…

Was… Just an okay read. Nothing amazing or truly memorable. It was easy to read, though. Perhaps the writing style wasn’t for me (as in, the author speaking directly to the reader via a character in the book.) Sad, as I usually really like Greek retelling.

Captivating and incredibly well written, so far I’ve loved everything from Natalie Haynes !
I’m very familiar with Greek mythology so the plot was not a surprise for me but I truly did not expect that ending, I can’t stop thinking about it.

The way the author performed the audiobook added a lot to the story.
