My only complaint is Maeve. She’s one of those narrators that is just so self-centered and drama creating. On the other hand, though, I like her more as a character because I know her thoughts and what’s going on in her head. If she wasn’t the narrator, I’d have no patience for her whatsoever. The representation was incredibly wonderful, and both the friendships and romance were nice without being too fluffy and conflict-less. I really liked how all of the details tied together and how the plot and conflict just kept building and building. The ending left a lot of questions unanswered, though, so I hope the sequel addresses them.
This book was a refreshing change of pace after reading the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab—it was a nice and engaging and simple read.
The queer rep and friendships reminded me a lot of Alice Oseman’s books, while the plot was more similar to that of the Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater.

The nice thing with books I get in the Book Box Club box is that I usually go in blind. I don't read the summary on the back. I don't look up reviews, promo or comments. When the buddy read week arrives, I just dive in and I just see what will happen and what kind of book I will be reading. I therefore didn't know what to expect from this book. I knew there might be a little bit of tarot magic in it, but that was about it.

From the very start I was positively and pleasantly surprised. Not even by the (possible) magic in the story, but more by the tone of the book. The story was really told as a teenager would tell it. The writing style really fit the main character perfectly. It made the book an easy and fast read, but it also made sure that the story sounded authentic and real. Because although there are some mysterious things happening in this book, a lot of it is real.

I like how diverse this book was and how it dealt with a lot of social issues without making it the focus of the story. I also think that especially the social issues, the protests against the queer community and the poisonous talk of someone with influence, added to the atmosphere of where this story took place. I don't know much about Ireland, but this book taught me a lot about Ireland along the way. The pretty and the awesome and the spiritual. But also the ugly and the fights and the hate.

On top of that I also truly enjoyed the characters in this story. Mostly because they too felt very authentic and very much like teenagers. They messed up. Badly. And then they did reckless and stupid things to fix it, not always successfully. They were fighting and hiding. But they were also vulnerable at moments, being honest with each other and very surprisingly also with others. And I loved most of all how they learned and grew from this experience.

I'm not sure if there will be a sequel. It's not a must, but there is potential. If there ever will be one, I'll be reading it for sure!

I don’t read YA as a rule but this book bangs. I’m a simple woman, I love a romance and I love witchy shit

I normally enjoy a YA book but this just felt slow and also a bit immature for the topic that happens at the end which I felt it just skirted over and didn't address properly.

A good background read, but not something to be relished.
