I am going to be honest - I couldn't separate Beau from Bella or Edward from Edyth, or any gender-swapped character from the original book. It didn't feel right, like Stephenie didn't fully commit to it. Beau felt like a woman, even though he's a man, and Edyth felt like a man, even though she's a woman. It came down to the fact that I was basically still seeing Bella & Edward.

I was reading different names but all of the characters had the same personalities, so it simply felt like a Twilight re-read. The characters are too well-established for this kind of book. Once I'd accepted that this was a re-read, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. However, I initially had issues because the characters didn't feel like they made sense.

For example, why was Beau portrayed like Reneé's PA, and Charlie didn't fight for custody because he's a man? The car talk also felt a bit odd because I already read Twilight and all I could think was "this isn't how it goes". Generally, it felt like information was missing, and I filled it in with information I had learnt about Bella, but that didn't necessarily work for Beau.

The writing style is also slightly different. Beau goes on and on in this book, which was not the case with Bella in Twilight (I re-read the start of Twilight to confirm that I wasn't going crazy because I was not feeling it with Life and Death, and I still loved Twilight), and I felt a bit bored. I know that Stephenie made changes that she thought would be better for the story, as mentioned in her foreword, but I didn't like them. It felt like Midnight Sun a bit, where it goes on a bit more than it should.

The foreword felt inaccurate too. Bella's annoyance was transferred to Edyth, and there wasn't any other difference Bella and Beau. I believe I also found some typos where "she's" are still "he's" etc, but I may have just read it too quickly.

I will say that I really enjoyed the new ending though. It was much cleaner and gave a fresh perspective of what could have been. I don't think it would have worked for the saga, but it worked for this book. Maybe Stephenie chose it because Beau wouldn't be able to have biological children with Edyth, so the Renesmeé plotline would become redundant?

Had I not considered this a Twilight re-read, it would have been a disappointment and I would have rated it ⭐⭐/5. Instead, I changed my perspective (because I could only see Bella and Edward) and decided to give my Twilight re-read ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5, docking one star for the part where I treated the characters as anything other than their new-named Twilight forms (I would have docked two stars if it wasn't for the new ending).

Bue is SO horny for Edythe, I love it
I'm also horny for Edythe because she's a million times more likeable than Edw*rd

Beau > Bella, protect this clueless boy

The writing is better, some (most?) of the scenes are expanded or changed and dialogues feel way more natural, which was a surprise.

Didn't think I would unironically like Twilight as an adult but here we are. This was good. We need more soft boys and immortal women (girls) together.

I think for the first half of the novel, I really enjoyed the swapped gender and it felt like a dynamic careful shift, but as the pace picked up, it got sort of more formulaic and unbelievable (well…more unbelievable). I thought that the end where
they let the venom run its course was a really interesting way to contain the story and rule out sequels. It did make it slightly more melancholic though in terms of the impact on Charlie and Renee. I maybe would have rather seen that play out as an alternative end to the original Twilight.

It’s still a really flawed mythology, but I really love that world and the possibilities of the characters. I seriously hope there are more novels to follow (but no more Midnight Sun, if’n ya please)

I think i prefered this book over the first twilight… I really liked the characters. Edythe was similar to Edward but no quite just like Beau vs Bella
I also liked how Archie’s visions were better explained. Some things were better written.
It didn’t deserve a five star because it is still twilight so it is still cringe but oh well. Meyer did a really good job. She made her point : it a story about a human and a vampire, not a girl and a vampire.
and the end… wow. Following Beau through is transformation was really different. It was beautiful how Meyer mixed love, sadness and grief. I felt so sad for Beau during his funeral but at the same time so happy that they have found themselves for “eternity”.
I kinda wish there were more books following this storyline.
