Interesting concept and characters, liked where was going but since the MC is very young still there’s much to happen, but won’t likely continue as the series is not yet finished.

Really interesting marriage of fantasy and alternate history of pioneer America. A little slow in parts (particularly once the "Taleswapper" character shows up), but overall, a very enjoyable read.

UPDATE:

I noticed today I gave this a four star rating and I thought that was odd. Because in the intervening years I have come to terms with the trash human being the man is. Now, I know what you're saying. Just because you're a homophobic Mormon zealot who ruined the Homecoming Saga with said homophobic Mormon zealotry doesn't mean that you're not a good sci-fi writer. Yes, I would agree. However, as this series progressed, I swear to you that I began reading one out of order and didn't notice until I was a third of the way through because I thought to myself, "Welp. Jarring and unpleasant is just how the man rolls." Another of the books in the series is, as I recall, one long courtroom scene of smug talking heads. But the thing that utterly, one hundred percent, destroyed any last vestige of tolerance for this man was that, having completed the series, THE BASTARD WROTE ANOTHER ONE.

ANOTHER UPDATE JUST AFTER THE FIRST ONE:

Dumbass past me, yes, Native Americans knew what cities are. Geez.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Orson Scott Card is always gonna have some weird ideas up in his books. I was doin' all right until the Indian started dreamin' about crystal cities. I didn't think Indians cottoned to cities, period.

Still, fun to read.

Wow. This was incredibly good. I was feeling skeptical about starting it and usually I don’t read reviews before picking up a book but i did and was almost deterred by the negatives. IM SO GLAD I IGNORED THEM.

This was such a well written book, with a story that towards the end made me wish it wasn’t ending. I’m thrilled to find it’s a series and I can’t wait to see and feel what’s next in store.

I’m not going to waste time attempting to recap.. just read it.

I love Orson Scott Card. This book is like Stephen King's gunslinger series, but actually good. It's a frontier fantasy with alternate US history, plus a gifted child and mysterious powers. Can't wait to continue reading this series.

Not my usual type of book, but I liked it!

I like Orson Scott Card, but this was kinda boring. It did make me want to read the Ender series again, though.

Book one in the Alvin Maker series.

Fantasy set in an alternate universe America in the early 1800's where magic abounds, even as many are wary and suspicious of it. Alvin Miller is the seventh son of a seventh son and has a special "knack" for making things. As he grows up, Alvin gradually learns more about his powers and purpose, and also meets the mysterious Unmaker, who will stop at nothing to destroy Alvin.

This Card series very, very loosely fictionalizes the life of Latter-day Saint prophet Joseph Smith but is based in what I would describe as a parallel history--one in which hexes, folk remedies and old fashioned superstitions are all reality.

My older brother took me book shopping for my birthday and when we stumbled across this he very emphatically told me that it didn't have to count against my quota, but that I was getting it.
It is truly a book that has its own story to tell. It is particular and strange, but terribly riveting and woven together in just such a way that it works. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series. I want to devour them.
