Liked the format of switching between two stories (one historical through eyes of a young girl and one current through eyes of adult). Premise of story left something to be desired.

I really wanted to hear Sarah's story. The rest feels like fluff to make this a novel vs a short story.
This book was forced on me by a friend. Fortunately it was a quick read. Moderately interesting subject matter, but very mediocre writing...like Dan Brown tackling the Holocaust for Oprah's Book Club. That might be an appealing trio of characteristics for some; it was not for me.
This book was much easier for me to read than the last one (Calamity Physics). While the subject matter is dark, the writing style is smooth and clear to understand. The format of the book is each chapter alternates between the past character's view in July 1942 Paris and a current character's view in present day Paris. This book depressed me but it was about an important event in French history that I was not aware of.
This book will keep you on your toes. And you’ll learn something that you might not have known. It flip flops between the past and present, I enjoyed this about the book. Powerful story.
A friend recommended this book when it first came out, but when she told me a little bit about it, I thought, 'nah, sounds depressing.'
Then another friend offered to loan it to me and I'm so glad I accepted the offer.
What an amazing story and so well told. The first third goes back and forth between Sarah, a 10-year-old French Jew who is rounded up with her family during the Holocaust and a present-day writer who learns about a time in France's history that overlaps with her in-laws' history.
The book is fast-paced and engrossing.

Adored this book. Loved the switching of times/places. I read this in just a couple of days.
