This book started out well and got predictable (not just the main story but the side stories too) and the main character tended to make herself a victim which I’m never a fan of. This book explored a WWII event I was not familiar with so that was an interesting aspect. Not a terrible book but I wouldn’t jump to recommend it.

There's a few minor twists I appreciated. But overall it was very predictable and overly sentimental. It really is heavy handed on the tragedy so it loses the nuance along the way. The story itself is creative and interesting but the writing I felt fell short as it seems to be treatin audiences like their blubbering idiots who are reading tragedy porn.
But maybe that has to do with me disliking the main character and narrator. I found her fairly unbelievable and her actions and emotions didn't feel justified in the context of the story.
Overall it was exactly okay.

It had me hooked 5 pages in, looking forward to seeing how it progresses. Finished this book on the way to MN this weekend, really enjoyed it. I thought the last 50 pages were a little much, not quite as intense as the rest of the book. Really enjoyed it though, learned about a moment in history that was very important that I had never heard of.

Such a touching story! Sometimes there was too much foreshadowing and dragging on what was to come next. I really enjoyed listening to this book on audio. I would definitely recommend it!
I was totally engrossed with this story. Sarah's story was tragic and well told. It brought to light pieces of history of which I had no clue, like the French rounding their own citizen Jews for transport to work camps. When Sarah's voice left the story, Julia's story kept me interested but wanting more. A good read but the very ending was expected.
I had seen the film version of this book when it first was released, and was very moved by it. The book is just as good as the film, and a heartbreaking story. Never forget.

Loved, Loved, Loved this book! I was unable to put it down and read it from start to finish! Puts in perspective what happened form a child's perspective and the reaction of an adult to the events as she researches the event for an assigned story. A must read for everyone! Do not skip over this book!
