This book proves to those people who refuse to read fiction because "it doesn't teach you anything" that they are mistaken. This book is fiction based on a real historical event that I was completely unfamiliar with - the Vel d'Hiv roundup. I liked how the author ties in the story of a young Jewish girl (Sarah) in 1942 with a modern day American story of a woman obsessed with finding out what happened to Sarah. While some aspects of the story are a bit predictable, I kept wanting to know what was to happen next and specifically, what happened with Sarah's story.

Forced to acknowledge an ugly part of world history, this book did a beautiful job of weaving the modern day and history in a seamless mesh, much like the way we live today. It walked us into and through the reckoning of the past, into the healing that can happen, and still, withheld the necessary integrity of the severity.

This book did the Vel d'Hiv Roundup justice.

Simply amazing.

Wish I could give this more than 5 stars.
One of the best books I’ve read this year.
emotional sad

Very fast read. Really good story. It reminded me a lot of The Virgin Blue.
