Really torn on this. I liked it, it had nice spooky moments and felt fresh and well written, but I never emotionally connected to the characters. I generally like moody dark characters, but Evelyn was a touch grim even for me, without any hint of happiness in her life.

This was a novella, and I think needed to be a little bit tighter. There’s something very strange going on and I would have liked to see a little more of that before the ending.

Evelyn Perdanu is the powerful shipping magnate of a dying country. Wearing a veil to grieve for her dead family and working in poisons, Evelyn knows that the life she currently has will soon come to an end.

When one of her ships brings a plague back to her city, a plague seeking her out specifically she's forced to return to her home and uncover the rot that has taken route.

Evelyn is meant to be an unlikeable protagonist and I enjoyed following her. She's selfish, she's cold and uncaring, and she's rash in ways that screw her over. Also, she's in love with her maid so sapphic rights!

4/5. I am grateful for a return to form with Starling and am no longer scared to read her newest release after the Jane Lawrence book I didn't care for. Plagues, devious lesbians, tragic protagonists, and a dying city.

What a RIDE. It was awesome and I definitely missed my bedtime to finish reading it.
