This book was everything I needed it to be. I saw through all of the "plot twists", but I enjoyed this book immensely! It's been on my "Most Anticipated" book list this year, and I'm happy to say it didn't disappoint!

Not enough smut, entirely predictable but fun.

It was fine…I think it was pretty well written, witty, and sweet but it was predictable and had familiar tropes (specifically the You’ve Got Mail plot point, but I do give credit for being self-aware). I do appreciate the queer representation and lack of homophobia. I also appreciated the total call out of misogyny.

This was my first Ali Hazelwood book.

The book annoyed me to no end for a 3/4 of the book. However , the characters grew on me towards the end.

I prefer it when authors show rather than tell about their characters. We hear so much about what a great neuroscientist Bee is. But we do not see why she is a great neuroscientist. There were one of two occasions where we do see that side of her but the rest was mainly repetition, “She’s the best in the field” yada yada yada. I needed extra geek activity and some flexing if not to others, at least her inner monologue. Her inner monologue sounded immature. And the crying , the fainting. It was a bit much.

However, the annoyance with the fainting did change to amusement as Ali manages to make it endearing at the end.

Another frustrating aspect of the book was the miscommunication trope. With much intellectual capacity suggested in the book, I expected it to be smoothed out quicker than that. She wears a wedding band and doesn’t even think of the impact?

Levi liking her so much that it was misconstrued. It felt very juvenile like how people will say “He teases you probably because he likes you.” It was a turn off but well-redeemed as the story progresses.

Overall, it was a quick and easy read.

Color me surprised. The last book I finished was also an Ali Hazelwood (Not in Love) and that book did not work for me. I went into this with the expectation honestly of DNFing it but imagine my surprise when I loved this! It was cute, it was sweet, it was smart without being overly obnoxious, and I loved the characters and the relationship development.

I did guess who her online penpal person was early on, but honestly that’s fine. I personally LOVE a story with an epistolary element to it (and I love when the person is revealed the way it was here)!
