This book..... I don't even know where to start with this book... It's one of my favorites. A Piece of Cake. Honestly this book isn't for the faint hearted. It has a lot of drugs, alcohol, and other subject matters. This book is about a girl named Cupcake, Her and her brother fight all the time and actually try a kill each other, She finds her mother dead, she gets thrown in foster care, where she's starved and assaulted sexually, emotionally and physically. She runs away a lot her father finds her but isn't the best.... she gets into prostitution, drugs and so much more. Her life is just one big roller coaster. But in the end she gets her life together and has become a lawyer. This book is based on her life, she is a real person and this book just goes to show no matter how low your life is or how far to the bottom you are even if you'r at the bottom of the barrel you can completely change your life around and make something of yourself.

A fascinating view into the life of a young addict. A page-turner I couldn't put down.
Memoir of a lawyer whose life started in the ghetto and got worse. A triumphant tale that is at times long winded.
Moving memoir that I could not put down. Her story is amazing. Proof that no one is "nothing". We all have potential waiting to be used. And also a STRONG commentary on the state of US foster system.

Whew! What a RIDE! I could not put this book down. What a detailed account of true tragedy, addiction, perseverance, struggle, hard work, triumph, and courage. Cupcake Brown is admirable in her honesty, her raw retelling of her most shameful moments and most of all in her drive to change her life for the better. There's a lot of intense traumatic storytelling but if you can get through it, you won't regret it. Highly recommend.

Whew what a ride! I always appreciate the courage of those who share their life stories and this is no exception. So many systems and people failed Cupcake and even times when she failed herself. I don't think I've ever been happy about someone joining a gang lol but loved when she was accepted there. This book was HEAVY and definitely should come with trigger warnings (rape, DV, drug use, alcoholism, miscarriage, abortion, child abuse). However, the ending and overall development was amazing to read!
