This book was a sweet and quick read about learning to fit in and adjusting to a new environment. I liked the discussion on English and how it doesn’t make a lot of sense. I also enjoyed Ana’s poetry that was included throughout the book. A quote that I liked was “The most important words are the ones we’re brave enough to share.”

This book is loosely based on the authors experiences of moving to an English speaking country. Anas journey show many struggles and it is clear to see how many people struggle when moving countries. I loved how the author blocked out some of the sentences because Ana doesn't know or understand the words. It made me feel like I was living this journey with Ana. This makes like difficult for someone line Ana, because it leaves them guessing what the other person said and leaves them confused. It was also lovely to see the inclusion of Spanish in this book. It made me feel like how Ana feels when she doesn't know what someone is saying.

It was nice to read about the relationships Ana made with both Harrison and Neo. It was also interesting to see how she built relationships with her other classmates. I understand it must have been hard for Ana being a non native language speaker but also coming into high school when other people have already made friends. It would have been nice to read more about her relationship with Altagracia, they seemed to be good friends and she seemed to get along with Anas family.

The strained relationship between Ana and her father was heartbreaking to read. Being apart for so long meant they did not really know each other any more. Many families must go through the same difficulties as parents would leave the family home to seek better opportunities for their family.

I received this book from Harper360 after requesting a copy from their newsletter. I am leaving this review voluntarily. I loved reading this book and it was a fast but meaningful read.

*DISCLAIMER* I’m going to preface this book review by saying when I originally picked up this book I thought it was an ownvoices story and throughout the entire novel it read like one. However after further research when finishing it I learned that this author only lived in Argentina for two years before moving to the US at age 8 and even admits she has white privilege. It’s disappointing because there are so many amazing #latinx authors out there that aren’t getting book deals that deserve them. While I really loved the book and there is a lot of author point of view throughout (you can definitely tell the author experienced a lot of what Ana went through herself) I wanted to make sure this information was shared.

Though I am a native English speaker, and have rarely been in situations where I couldn't find the words I needed to communicate, the author perfectly describes the stress and sadness and loneliness of not being able to say what you want and be heard.

I loved this book.

I usually don't like romance (and the quote on the back of this book made me roll my eyes) but this book was so good. It's about so much more than the romance.
Whether you like romance or not, you should read this book. It will make you see ESL individuals in a whole new light. English is a ridiculously difficult language to learn, and this book really puts it into perspective.
The author draws from her own personal experience and creates such a raw, authentic perspective. I love the way that she writes the dialogue, including "####" for words that Ana doesn't understand. Ana's poems throughout the book add an extra layer and really makes you think.
