UPDATE ON REREAD: Still one of the hardest reads, still desperate for all the old guards to get what's coming to them and a little frustrated that hasn't happened yet - each book has all these small characters that are getting left behind when our MCs get a chance for freedom and I want a resolution for them all.
ORIGINAL REVIEW
Jeezo does this series put you through the ringer. I'd been reading this story as it was released chapter by chapter and then had to stop because I couldn't keep reading the grimness without getting to the resolution.
Now, I don't feel we got a resolution in this book, which was about much more than Wrenlee and Clay's relationship. The now very much exposed rot that is at the core of these packs is still rotting away and I need it fixed. Would a mass poisoning event have been too much? I love the growing overarching plot in this series, I'm excited to see where it goes and I'm happy Quarry Pack gets to be on the right side of it (I hope). I'd love a crossover with C.M. Nascosta's Cambric Creek so Jack Hemmings could come in and rescue all these wolves (although Wells' story has much more of a communitarianist slant?). I also loved that this book centres the most explicit challenge to Fate as the motivating factor in choosing relationships - both Clay and Wrenlee are sure they picked each other. That feels important as their relationship was one of the most painful ones to witness. Sexual assault looms heavily throughout this story - even the initial rejection was based around a threat of sexual assault. More than any other couple these two deserve to control their own narrative going forward - they worked hard for their HEA.
I love, by the way, checking in on Quarry Pack. They aren't doing gendered slurs now and if that's not progress what is?

Cate Wells always delivers on the angst. I really liked this story and it packed a lot of punch for such a quick read.

A solid novella that advances the overarching plot of this series. A lot of trauma for the heroine.
