Sure, sure, this is very cliched.. but oh man, I enjoyed it. Thank goodness Goodreads has a "you might also like..." feature, otherwise I probably never would have picked this up. Can't wait for the next volume!

SWON 2015 reading challenge book five hundred and thirty five.

Okay so, I originally read Fushigi Yugi when i was in junior high and high school. I was really into the romance and adventure and mythology of the story. I adore Watase's art. It's really the thing that still draws me toward her work.

However, looking back on the story, i'm spending a lot of time wondering what the hell I saw in it. Miaka is ridiculously, insanely, unbelievably stupid basically in order to move the plot forward. Tamahome is mostly just kind of hanging around being alternately boring and money-grubbing. Hotohori... apparently randomly in love with Miaka but mor with the idea of her. And lastly, Nuriko.

Nuriko is one of my favorite characters but i don't really understand her motivations in this part of the story. Having read it before and knowing what i do about her, her actions don't make much sense. Like, what were you gonna do when your secret was eventually found out, Nuriko? Just... so frustrating reading this again. I mean, yeah okay, love who you love but...
Hotohori's never gonna be able to marry you cuz you're a guy
...

Anyway, gonna continue my reread. Just hoping it gets less cringe-worthy.

This is the first series I ever read. This book was given to me for my 18th birthday and set off a manga-reading frenzy. I remember sneaking out of church between services to quickly go buy manga at the bookstore nearby with my bestie and then get back in time for second hour. So this is my childhood. It's heavily romance-centered, so I was afraid I wouldn't like it. But I still love it!! It's humorous and I can totally relate to the gluttanous Miaka.

Ever wondered what would happen if you and your best friend got sucked into an ancient/cursed book you found in your local library? Well thanks to Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi, that question is answered by Miaka and Yui's experiences inside a book called The Universe of the Four Gods. I have wanted to read this manga series since I was a teenager. After so many years of wanting to read this classic manga, I have finally finished Fushigi Yugi. I'm not going to delay this further, let's jump right into the review:

I love this series so much. I have never laughed, cheered, or cried harder with any manga I've ever had the pleasure reading. I know now why Fushigi Yugi is considered a manga classic. The characters are beautifully well thought out and have amazing development! The story itself is really good; it was unpredictable, going in completely different directions that I never expected it to go. The dialogue in Fushigi Yugi is incredible, Yuu Watase writes as wonderfully as she draws and the English translator did a very good job translating her words. A lot of it was surprisingly powerful. Even now I wish I had written them down when I had the chance, because a lot the characters say some very amazing quotes. The writing was so fantastic. I can't praise this manga enough.

Fushigi Yugi is not for everyone. It deals with a lot of heavy/dark subject matter involving teenage girls, not for softhearted readers or kids. However, the funny/lighthearted moments are just as common as the dark/horrifying ones; so I think it's balanced. If you choose to read Fushigi Yugi, I think that you'll find a unique and powerful story that you had no idea that you needed. It's fun, it's scary, it's full of adventure, it's a tearjerker—it's one of the greatest mangas I have officially ever read. I highly recommend Fushigi Yugi, it was an amazing reading experience I will always appreciate and treasure.

The art style is pretty. Cute story that’s very reminiscent of Chinese historical romances that I love. This was a buddy read with Nat for our podcast so if she’s good with reading another volume I would be too.

Oh good lord!! I used to be so obsessed with this series!! But reading it now, wow, it’s pretty bad. The art is beautiful, but the story itself it pretty formulaic for a shojo. A ditzy heroine who becomes a chosen one, suddenly everyone is in love with her for no reason, she falls in love with a guy knowing him for two days. Lord!! And really random things happen to move the plot a long, usually barely relating to one another. Weak transitions, and just overall poor writing.

A very good manga. I enjoyed Alice 19th by the same author, so I thought I'd give this one a shot. This is a good one, too. :) Though it does sort of peeve me that my edition was flipped it so it is read left-to-right American style instead of the usual Japanese right-to-left, but since this manga is old and from before right-to-left was common in the US, I guess that's understandable. Still makes me a little annoyed, though. :(

Welcome to a new manga recap session! Today's docket is Fushigi Yugi (aka The Mysterious Play, waaaay back when this was originally translated and released by Viz) volume 1: Priestess.

Meet Miaka Yuki, an average Japanese middle school student cramming for her exams. Meet Yui Hongo, an above average student who is (supposedly) Miaka's Bestie. They find a forbidden book called "The Universe of Four Gods" and the power it contains. Miaka goes back, cause hey easy Street am I right?, and Yui is more or less stuck dealing with that in our world.

In this vol we meet: Tamahome (profiteering jack of all trades master martial artist), Hotohori (the prettiest flower...also the Emperor) and Nuriko (one tough broad...er delicate lady of the Inner Seraglio).

We can recap like this: Miaka don't do that! (does it) Miaka do this! (runs away) Miaka listen! (tunes out) Miaka I love you! (freaks out) Miaka I don't care about you! (faints)

Plus eating every chance she could.

I forgot how early on Hotohori falls for Miaka and just how rabidly anti-Miaka Nuriko was originally. I love Tamahome & Nuriko's dynamic, but Nuriko is pretty awesome. Really everyone is pretty awesome...until they succumb to the reverse harem rule: thou must love the heroine.

At the time I didn't realize it but this IS a reverse harem. Which is odd cause there's a lot of copy cat animes most of which are based on otome games. I could be wrong but I don't think FY was ever turned into an otome game (lost opportunity there). This would make a fantastic live action historical drama (there was the one based on Inuyasha...not that it was good, but this is at least as pretty as Chinese Paladin. Actually Hu Ge would have made a great Tamahome and Alec Su a good Hotohori, back in the day).

Time passes super fast for Miaka, but that's actually explained later. First mention of my all time favorite side character Tai-yi Jun. She's lol Grandma Toph, but even crankier.

Nice nostalgia trip, though young me (15) was so impressed by Hotohori's confident confession to Miaka. Old me (32) is like I AM JUST GLAD WATASE INCLUDED CONSENT STIPULATIONS.
