Book 2 of the Cat and Mouse Duet.. again please check the trigger warnings before opening this book.

Being honest I didn’t find the second book as gripping as the first… the story to start with seemed to drag on and occasionally ew characters were introduced and I had to go back a page or two to figure out what was going on.

The story between Zade and Addie still had me hooked and how their relationship evolves and grows but the rest I was just a bit meh! about.

I know there’s 2 other books that link to this duet but I’m not 100% sure I’ll be in a hurry to read them!

PSA: Your mental health matters. If this book is not for you, please PLEASE, stop reading the book as it's not for the faint of heart. I will be rating the spice as well, BUT it is only regarding towards the "dubious consent"

The grime and dark picked up pretty quickly right off the bat. I was warned multiple times about this. I thank my friends who have read it for warning me, and have read the trigger warnings. The story was pretty good, did I hoped for more....dark and twisted shit? Honestly, yes a little bit actually. I felt the plot was pretty straight to the point, though the dialogue/writing is still off to me.  The over use of "yin/yang eyes" was too much though I get it since Zade has heterochromia eyes.

I also felt the climax g was a bit cringe at the end, a bit too much "like the movies" as Addie calls it. And the ending was pretty nice and left a bit of a cliffhanger for a character that I hope we get a book on.

Hunting Adeline is the second book of H.D. Carlton’s Cat and Mouse Duet. Both books are a mix of dark romance and suspense that delves heavily into human trafficking. This second book of the duet is much darker than the first.

To say that my feelings about these books are complicated is the understatement of the year. What a journey I feel like I’ve been on throughout this duet. I don’t even feel like the same person I was when I started it. This is without a doubt one of the darkest books that I’ve ever read. I found it to be well written and compelling while simultaneously terrible and distressing.

This is the first time the trigger warnings at the beginning of a book have ever given me real pause. When I saw the warning that it is not a quick reunion, I hesitated to turn the page but continued on with trepidation. The trauma and brutalization is tough to read. It helps that I read the worst of it while at my kid’s tournament because I couldn’t really immerse myself in the story, which is the only I have of how I made it through it.

The dichotomies of Zade’s character are tough to reconcile. But, somehow Zade’s “burn the world” vibes are kind of … hot? And I appreciate Addie’s redemption arc, but, wow, is it tough it is to get there. Part of me definitely hopes that there are real-life Zades out there in the world effectively combatting evil.

Personally I loved it, l just got back into reading and I have been looking for a similar book/series since. Have finished the series and unsure if I’ll find another book that grasped my attention as much as this did.

This was interesting before
Addie was saved
but things after that resulted in me losing interest and increased my dislike for Zade.
