Fall Back Down When I Die by Joe Wilkins

There isn't a wrong note in Wilkins's new novel. He manages to pull off the development of characters simultaneous with a growing sense of unease, that something really bad is going to happen. We just don't know what, or to whom. Wilkins handles the landscapes and the clash of cultures around who that land and everything on it really belongs to, pitting neighbor against neighbor, outsider against local. It feels like everything I've loved about Wilkins's work -- poetry, essays, short fiction -- all came together in service to this brilliant piece of writing.

This Book Has A Lot Of HEART!

I didn't know how I was going to like this one. But I ended up really enjoying it. It evokes so much emotion from the reader. This book has great character development. You really feel for these characters. You find yourself consistently hoping for them. I thought the setting of the American midwest was perfect. It offered so much to the storyline. The author has a great talent for description. Be it the landscapes or the characters.

Thank You to the Publisher for sending me an ARC.

A relief falling down through him like rain

It was about oblivion, the swirling pain we embrace hoping to eclipse the greater, harder pain of loss.

But Tavin’s making time. All he’ll ever have. The world has taken everything from him and he’s taking it right the fuck back. They’ll wear each other form to nothing, this world and him, right down to sulfur, dust, and bone.

As if the land cannot hold us anymore as if the line of earth and sky has fouled we are falling through the wolfholes of stars boy we are falling down

If I were to pick up a rock or stone out here and call it mind it would only fall back down when I die

He’s nowhere anymore but in Rowdy’s heart. That’s what Ms. Houston says. Rowdy looks down, his breath blooming and fading before him, and taps his chest. That’s where his uncle Wendell is. He smiles and takes off running, carries his uncle Wendell with him up into the mountains.
