This book was very helpful to me during my pregnancy. I liked reading about the next months and getting to know what’s going to happen or what I’m going to experience.

Read the earlier chapters along with my pregnancy, spacing them out so I could read the section right before I reached that milestone. Then, in month 8, just read through the remaining chapters to get them all in before baby arrives. This was SO HELPFUL. It will definitely be staying on my shelf and be a great resource.

Helpful but at times it was easier just to look up online.

Don't read this if you're expecting unless you want to be scared out of birth. It focuses on everything that can go wrong- and pregnant women do NOT need stress like that.

I am a person who likes to have as much information as possible, and in that regard, this book can be very helpful. I do like the amount of detail it contains and the week by week breakdown, and I also appreciate a lot of the biological inclusions that help you wrap your head around what’s actually happening.
That said, I also feel like this book has a good number of flaws. I don’t find it to be overly inclusive, it’s definitely not body positive in any way, and I find it can be overly judgemental. It’s been a solid reference guide for some things but it isn’t my go-to resource. Also if you’re not American, there’s a huge amount that’s irrelevant, there wasn’t much effort at inclusivity for other cultures or nationalities.

The bad reviews on this book are honestly kind of funny to me. It's a comprehensive book about pregnancy; from common sense knowledge (eat your veggies, put down the wine) to explaining rare circumstances and medical complications. Murkoff tries to stay as positive as possible (maybe this wasn't the case in older versions?) and mentions that things are usually fine 99% of the time. If you're the type to get stressed out from reading about the multitude of medical complications that could arise during a pregnancy then this isn't a book for you. Luckily there are so many pregnancy book on the market, each with their own unique perspective. Consider this a birds-eye-view primer.
