Again with the very slow build. I like atmosphere as much as the next person, but this truly took an eternity to get anywhere. Which, considering this book is barely 150 pages, is saying something. Also, my frustration with the plethora of pronouns continues. It was distracting and confusing. But the dark humor and excellent prose more than make up for the shortcomings.

There were moments that genuinely startled me, written in vivid language that made them almost visible as if I were watching a movie.Creepy and tense and terrifying by turns, but lightened periodically by the main character’s wit. It was a fun read, but not a favorite.

As much as I loved What Moves the Dead, this was just mediocre. I really love Alex, but I don’t think this book needed to exist. I don’t think it added enough to the world where if there is a 3rd book i would read it. That said, it was very T Kingfisher. It was a dark fairytale which I really like. I read it in a single sitting. It was creepy and I enjoy Alex’s inner voice.

If What Moves the Dead was the blueprint, this was an inspired take on something that worked so well. It dialed up everything I loved about the first book, and was delightfully creepy!

The setting and writing here were excellent! I loved being back in this universe and meeting Easton again. With that said, the plot was a little underwhelming and so were the spooky bits.
