I enjoyed the book, but I felt this was on the wrong side of "fantastique" literature for me.
During the two thirds of the book, the main character keeps saying "surely, it can't be a ghost", and "you will think I am dumb for not believing it was a ghost, etc." Given Alex's first adventure, I could not believe how they avoided the clues so obviously. I also wanted to know more about Moroi, and the resolution was too rushed for my liking. (That is partly on me. I am not a novella fan)

On the plus side, the writing was enjoyable, and I got very attached to the characters.

I love the sworn soldier series, and the adventures of Alex Easton. This book was really fun, though I found it to be more slow paced and took longer to get to the actual punch in the story than What Moves The Dead.  As someone who has grown up learning about urban legends and monsters I was thrilled to read about the Moroi.    I am looking forward for  the third book in the sworn soldier series.

Despite being a smaller story than its predecessor, it is an atmospheric folk tale with loveable characters, an excellent exploration of PTSD, and lot of great world-building.
