this was interesting!! not at all what I expected, but I think it worked for me - I loved the complicated characters and relationships and the unexpected collaborations

It took me some time to finish this one and honestly speaking I skimmed though some parts. I had to force myself to read through the parts in Duncan's office and I found Elliott's character not very convincing, like a one dimensional "baddie" from a children's film. People are not evil for the sake of being evil. The Seeds of revolution also bugged me to no end even though the characters were more believable. I enjoyed Cass' and Yummy's character development though. The plot was good but the narration was tedious and at times too slow.

I guess I persevered and read the book to the end because I wanted to see how it would end, but it left me with a very indifferent feeling. As a biologist I can see that the angle on the whole GMO subject was very biased, plus I would have liked to see more of the female characters supporting each other rather than talking shit behinds each other's back.

Perhaps it is because this is the first non-technical, purely for fun reading that I’ve done in a while, but as a very casual reader whose only hunger is representation in stories, I was very pleased with this book. As a Japanese American who grew up working a produce stand and who is currently living through a polarized political climate in which the right to ones own organs and bones, tendons and other fleshy matter, I was bought in.

Through the plot, we arrive at the center of everything, the crossroads of supposed opposites: science and religion, old and new, society and individuality. The experience of reading was perhaps suggestive of the subject matter itself; it very much felt like I was running through a growing season. Moments of sheltering, huddling, not particularly driving or visceral were sleepy and a prepared lull or hibernation during episodes of Cass trying to engage Will, an unwilling participant In conversation. Moments of action, movement, growth, nurturing, sweetness.
