This book is just devastating. The epilogue broke me.
A River in Darkness is a story of a man’s firsthand account of life before, during and after living in North Korea. It is not a light read whatsoever.
The descriptions of starvation, abuse, death, illness and brainwashing are just horrific.

“When you’re starving to death, you lose all the fat from your lips and nose. Once your lips disappear, your teeth are bared all the time, like a snarling dog. Your nose is reduced to a pair of nostrils. I wish desperately that I didn’t know these things, but I do.”
If you’re looking for a happy book, this is not it. Just as the title says, A Rover in Darkness is the story of a man who escaped the oppressive regime of North Korea. But it is also the story of how he was dragged to a country he did not know, and told he was worth nothing. The story of how he had to watch his friends and family disappear. How he was left to starve along with so many others, and forced to leave his family. This left me heartbroken, but as a first hand narrative of a man who escaped, it is so important to read.

Probably the most depressing and disturbing book I will ever read. Rember all the things you assume are wrong about North Korea, the reality is worse. Anyone curious to know about North Korea, do give it a shot.
