what a shocking turn of events! đ
plot line: When Hugh Henry Van Boren, one of the most popular and richest kids in Jess Choudhary's school, is found dead, the student body is left reeling and wondering who the murderer could be... Jess, a student under strict instructions to keep her record clean or risk losing her scholarship, finds herself at the centre of the investigation when it's revealed that Hugh died in the exact same way as a character in a short story she wrote.
And then Jess receives an anonymous text thanking her for the inspiration.
With time running out, Jess knows if she doesn't solve this mystery she'll finally have something in common with Hugh Henry.
She'll be dead too.
my thoughts:
after having this book on my bookshelf for quite some time and it also being on my â24 books in 2024â challenge , I thought it was finally time that I read this!
whilst majority of this book had lots of shocking twists and turns , I couldnât get past the amount of confusion I had due to the amount of characters this book had đ (not to mention some of them didnât need to be added because they had such little involvement with the plot)
unfortunately, I did guess the killer quite early on within the book so wasnât caught âoff guardâ but was still intrigued to know how they were involved!
I think this book (in my opinion) is more targeted to younger readers and those who are new to this genre
overall , this book was good and had lots of interesting elements, I just think (for me) it needed some adjustments

This miiiight be a 3.5-star Iâve rather stodgily rounded down, but I stand by it. It had its moments ⌠it felt kinda atmospheric which is always nice, and it did keep me guessing (although the standing suspicion I had throughout held true), but overall it just fell short. Characters were underdeveloped and by consequence, not as likeable as they couldâve/shouldâve been, it was a bit sloppy in places (editors unite!), the pacing was odd (taking forever in some places and blowing through others in a sentence of two), and just not quite as clever as I expected/hoped. But as with most 3-stars, it kept me reading, which is something. It was fun. Not a waste of time if youâre in the mood for a teenaged mystery.
