Dark places was a good book, it wasn’t the best but it wasn’t the worst, which is why I gave it what I’d consider the midway point of 3 stars.

I enjoyed finding out who the murderer was of the family, but I didn’t enjoy the ending. Patty deciding to get herself murdered for the insurance money just seemed stupid in my opinion, how would she know if they’d just kill her? And true to my point he also kills Debby.

Then we have Ben, the supposed murderer, he definitely wasn’t innocent in all of this, as much as that fanatic group says. He was a disturbed kid and I really didn’t like his character at all. I mean who lets their crazy girlfriend murder their sister? That’s fucked up??

I wanted to love this book I really did, but I couldn’t really stand any of the characters, I gave it three stars solely for the writing & the way the chapters were done. Not for the actually characters.

3.5 stars.

I was interested to try another Flynn after enjoying Gone Girl. She certainly likes to play with her reader, getting you to guess.

And it's a great guessing game this time around too. I listened to this, and the format transferred well to audiobook, easy to follow and not confusing, with characters and narrators obvious.

I admit to preferring Gone Girl though. I love the delicious evil nature of certain characters and the brilliant second act twist.

This is enjoyable though. Two decades on from the brutal murder of her mother and sisters (for which her elder brother has served the intervening period in prison) Libby Day is approached by a club of people who investigate dubious convictions and killers. Ordinarily she wouldn't entertain them, but the pity money she'd lived on for 24 years is about to run out. Despite believing in her brother's guilt, she agrees to open doors for them and delve into the murders, for a price.

We follow Libby now, and her mother and brother leading up to the night of the massacre.

The reader is encouraged to make lots of wild guesses as more is revealed. Libby isn't likeable (intentionally), but I didn't really care what happened to her because of this. The final reveal isn't a let down, but it isn't what I was expecting.

Quite tense at times, with the murder scene itself a little upsetting if you're not keen on violence towards children.

Not as good (or as psychologically 'deep') in my opinion as Gone Girl but a very readable mystery thriller.

Couldn't put it down. Great voice and writing. Kept me in suspense until close to the end and I can usually figure out "whodunit" pretty quickly. I absolutely recommend it to anyone who likes a dark tale with plenty of blood, mystery, and a nice touch of humor mixed in.
