This was a sweet enough story. The mystery felt rather obvious to me, but I didn't mind too much because the point is clearly more about the characters. I like the world that is built here and the way it's used to explore the themes of sexism and abuse of power.

it was ok. I would've liked it more without Morleys POV but whatever. love me a good sapphic love story with ghosts. more of that, please! 

honestly my biggest issue was the constant framing of a port wine stain birthmark being ugly. I know this is a historical novel, but it is so frustrating seeing it constantly mentioned throughout the book. ready player one did this too and it pisses me off. 

your birthmark is not an imperfection, a problem, nor is it disgusting. there is nothing wrong with any type of birthmark, regardless of where it is. what size it is. nor its colouring. and dont let anyone or any book make you feel otherwise.

The plot was fabulous (I really enjoyed the seances, the concept of the society, as well as the few surprise twists that show up) but the writing was a wild ride of pretty good to annoyingly bad. Information that was obvious was often re- introduced...I felt like I was being spoon fed ideas and event timelines that were obvious. 
I was not a fan of most of the characters and the romance was completely unnecessary, very odd at times, and felt like it was thrown in for whatever reason. (Because romance is popular??)

This was such a disappointment because I really enjoyed S Penner's previous book, and this concept had so much potential.

Really disappointed with this one. It read like a sixth grader dabbling in queer fanfic: no character development, a predictable and lackluster plot, and eye rolling prose (if it can even be called that).
