A really good book.
The writing was so poetic and absolutely enthralling.
A very short read but does it pack a punch.
Filled with so much pain and anguish.
The separation and devastation of this family trying to find a place to exist in peace together.
Very interesting how Andean tales were also weaved in.

We all know the enemy 👀👀

Check trigger warnings!! There are a lot!!

A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.

Authors who can pack an emotional punch in less than 200 pages are the true masters of their craft.

This story of a migrant family split up between Colombia and the US really affected me. The use of past tense and the periodic POV shifts were a little off-putting at first, but then it all made sense by the end. And that ending especially made me cry. Just really enjoyed this simple yet ultimately hopeful story of a family trying to stay together despite all the obstacles. I also really loved the sprinkling in of Colombia's mythology and native history.

It was absolutely harrowing to relive the Trump years through the eyes of Elena and Mauro. I appreciated the juxtaposition between the US's crimes and the crimes happening in Colombia. One place isn't any safer than the other. The whole world is a mess.

I liked the family’s story overall and learning of the challenges of undocumented immigrants
but talia’s story specifically felt odd and out of place. Like she was a totally normal girl then all of the sudden she’s throwing burning oil at people and escaping from Colombian juvie and hitchhiking accords the country. Did I miss her criminal past somewhere in the story?? All the sudden she’s an expert. I guess her just simply returning to her mother was not interesting enough??
otherwise well written and liked the lore sprinkled in throughout!
